Legal Nurse Consultant & Government Agencies

There are a variety of roles a legal nurse consultant may enter in a government agency. LNCs can be found working for state attorney generals’ offices, state health boards, the Department of Justice, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

An LNC may work on healthcare policy, as administrators for disability offices, health care fraud, and even the defense or prosecution of medical schools, prison healthcare systems, or college medical facilities.

Government employees tend to be paid a little less than their corporate counterparts but enjoy additional benefits not found in the private sector.

Government Patient Safety Organizations

Patient Safety Organizations (PSOs) are state and federal government organizations that collect and analyze patient safety reports sent to them by healthcare facilities. In some states, it is mandatory for hospitals and other medical facilities to file a report with the PSO for any event that results in a patient being harmed.

Legal nurse consultants working for a PSO review the reports and gather together data from facilities within the state and/or nationwide to help identify trends related to patient safety. Typically this leads to the development of educational materials designed to assist medical facilities in decreasing patient injuries. The medical background of LNCs makes them uniquely qualified for these positions.
