My mother had a hysterectomy on 4/23/08 in Richmond, VA. During the surgery, a uterer was cut. As a result, an additional surgery had to be performed and she was in the OR for almost 6 hours. My mom is having serious complications. While complications happen during surgeries, this was a very serious error. I'm not sure if we have a case against the hospital/doctors, but I want to ensure that the hospital at least covers medical follow up required due to the error. 
I know the uterer is close to the uterus, and it is my understanding that cutting the ureter is a risk of the procedure. However, just because it was a known complication of the surgery doesn't mean that there was no malpractice. I've contacted a couple of medical malpractice law firms in Virginia, but they're not being very helpful and I get the impression they're having a hard time assessing if this would be a good case. I will get a copy of the chart once my mom is discharged so that it can be reviewed by a legal nurse consultant. The surgery was in Virginia, however, I live in NYC and can consult with a nurse here if not possible to find one in VA. However, I'm having difficulty finding a nurse either in VA or in NY with experience with surgical procedures for hysterectomies/urinary tracks.
