Legal Nurse Consultant & Workers’ Compensation
Workers’ Compensation is a state program that pays medical expenses and sometimes cash benefits to people who have been hurt on the job. The role of a legal nurse consultant is to read the medical records of claimants, coordinate medical care, and prepare claims for litigation if appropriate.
Some LNCs also operate as medical case managers for claimants. However, the extent of their involvement is regulated by the state. In some states, the LNCs are simply the point of contact for the different parties involved in the claim. Others are required to be more involved. Typically LNCs that operate as case managers have the Certified Case Manager credential and backgrounds in rehabilitation, occupational nursing, orthopedics, or home health care.
